Navajo Council’s Naabik’iyati Committee finally convenes

I’m here at the Navajo Nation Council chambers in Window Rock, Ariz., where the Council’s top committee, the Naabik’iyati Committee was scheduled to convene at 10 am. Naabi Committee Chairperson Pro Tem LoRenzo Bates called the meeting to order at 1:54 p.m. After invocation, the Committee went to Recognizing Guests and Visiting Officials and so the Committee members are making announcements, introductions of guests, ETC.

COMMITTEE MEMBER EDMUND YAZZIE
I’d like the Council to hear a Report from NM Sen. Munoz regarding the Navajo Nation’s operation of Detox Center in Gallup, NM, because Munoz thought that the holding time for individuals picked up for public intoxication would be 72 hours but the Gallup Detox Center is releasing the individuals earlier and there have been three individuals that have died from exposure. Temperatures in the Gallup area have dropped below freezing.
And What are we to expect at Jan. 13 Inauguration. You as leader should not lead us into dark area and I feel that. You and your staff are not giving us information. It’s like driving around without lights.
Are we going to appoint pro temp Speaker and Interim President?
Please sir inform us. We hear things from your office and we don’t know what’s happening. We didn’t get turkeys for Thanksgiving like we use to.
NAABI COMMITTEE CHAIRPERSON PRO TEM LORENZO CURLEY
Everything is in place. Place was only hangup. It’s going to be held at Fort Defiance Sports Center. We worked all the details out. We did research and got with people who we are with.

COMMITTEE MEMBER LORENZO CURLEY
Held meeting with Human Rights Group regarding Jan. 8, 2015, Hearing on liquor transfer belonging to Red Barn. We plan to ask for continuence of Hearing.
Sentencing for Mr. MacDonald is Jan. 13, 2015,
I’d like Report from the Navajo Nation Human Rights Office regarding this matter.

COMMITTEE MEMBER LEONARD TSOSIE
On Jan. 13, 2015, the Speaker Pro Tem Bates needs to consider a Special Council Session where the Council can appoint an Interim President because Counselor Chapter has informed me that they don’t want President Ben Shelly to continue as President until a New President as elected.
And I’d like a letter sent from Speaker Pro Temp to the chapters to inform them that chapter funds are allowed to be used to purchase fire wood for elders.
And some of my legislation are to go to Naabi and my legislation to Pardon Election Board is not on today’s agenda.
Commenting on Mr. Pete’s comment, the Executive Branch wanted to do orientation on Jan. 6 and 7, 2015. So maybe sometime in January, we could ask for exit reports from all the Divisions and Committees. Committee member/Delegate Leonard Pete asked for exist reports from the committees, which would assist new Council Delegates.

COMMITTEE CHAIRPERSON PRO TEM BATES
We do have your pardon and when get to Agenda, it can be added.

COMMITTEE MEMBER/DELEGATE LEONARD TSOSIE
The only problem is I have to get on my knees and I have to turn in all my brownie points.

COMMITTEE CHAIRPERSON PRO TEM BATES
Regarding Exit Reports will occur on Jan. 6 & &, 2015, and we are coordinating that with Office of President and Vice President.
