Navajo Council Delegate Edmund Yazzie: I oppose uranium mining
April 14, 2014 Professional Journal

HERE AT NAVAJO COUNCIL LAW AND ORDER COMMITTEE WHERE HRI/HYDRO-URANIUM RESOURCES INC. IS PRESENTING.

LOC CHAIRMAN EDMUND YAZZIE
I am opposed to this and i stated this wen we were all campaigning. I heard tribal officials say they opposed and then they flipped. there is term called “flippers”. Some colleagues have asked Don’t they understand no. And why Churck Rock where the previous uranium tailings spill is the worst in the world, not USA, but world. Then HRI comes in and says it’ll be safe and the water will be safe. But I think of the kids from Eastern Navajo and there are five Navajo communities that have passed resolutions opposing HRI. The only Navajo community in Eastern Navajo supporting HRI is Churhc Rock, NM. And then the Companies to us with jobs. That’s a broken CD. And I see the Navajo employee driving old vehicles and these company people driving new vehicles. This needs to go to the Council. I think of Iyanbeto with Solar Project and Fort Wingate land issues.

And then HRI has been repreating “court, court.” But we, delegates, speak for the people and I hear people from home. Scotty Begay Jr., a former uranium worker, was told to bury uranium waste by the former uranium company. Begay Jr. is willing to testify. His concern is also for the livestock. Scotty sat down with me and told me “horrific” stories.

HRI, i respect you and you have luxury of making presentation and when drilling starts, you can go home, away from Church Rock, and apologize is there is a accident involving the community water.

And I believe that Santa Fe Railroad took our Navajo land.

But Law and Order Committee we need to re-open the Resources and Development Committee’s legislation that created this Subcommittee of 2 delegates to work with HRI on a draft agreement with the tribe for a demonstration In-Situ Uranium Mining Project near Church Rock. I and Delegate Danny Simpson are sponsoring legislation to nullify the RDC legislation that created that Subcommittee.
