Who should spend Navajo Nation $554M settlement?

The Navajo Nation Council Naabik’iyati Committee has LEGISLATION 0045-17 on its proposed March 23, 2017, agenda.

Legislation 0045-17 would terminate the Sihasin Subcommittee, which is primarily Budget & Finance Committee members, and return authority to the full Naabik’iyati Committee on how the Navajo Nation $554 million settlement is spent.

The debate on whether to remove the Sihasin Subcommittee and return authority to the Naabik’iyati Committee involves criteria created by the Sihasin Subcommittee, which requires: Projects to address economic development, generate revenues, create jobs, be shovel ready, and project owners to have 30 percent equity with proof of funding.

Contact your respective Navajo Nation Council Delegate to let him or her whether you support or opp0ose Legislation 0045-17 and email your public comments to <comments@navajo-nsn.gov>, which is the Navajo Nation Office of Legislative Services. Comments may be one sentence and simply state your support or opposition.

The title of Legislation is An Action Relating to Naabik’iyati’ Committee; Rescinding Resolution NABIAP-20-15 and NABIN-6815, Establishing the Naabik’iyati’ Sihasin Fund Subcommittee and Recommendation TimeTable and Extending the Term of the Naabik’iyati’ Sihasin Fund Subcommittee.

The description of Legislation 0045-17: This resolution if approved will rescind the Naabik’iyati’ Committee’s delegation of its authority, to the Naabik’iyati’ Sihasin FUnd Subcommittee, the Naabik’iyati’ Committee will resume the role currently being filled by the Naabik’iyati’ Sihasin Fund Subcommittee.

The sponsor of 0045-17 is Navajo Nation Council Delegate Raymond Smith Jr. The co-sponsors are Navajo Nation Council Delegates Edmund Yazzie and Kee Begay Jr.

The Naabik’iyati Committee has final authority over 0045-17.
