Navajo Nation referendum to remove Navajo language fluency requirement passes

The unofficial results of the Referendum to no longer require presidential candidates to speak the Navajo language fluently was approved by about 20 percent of the Navajo voters on July 22.

The UNOFFICIAL RESULTS show that there were 13,017 votes “FOR” and 11,778 votes “AGAINST.”

The results will remain unofficial for ten days and then they will be certified by the Navajo Board of Election Supervisors.

The ten days are to allow the filing of an election complaints with the Navajo Nation Office of Hearings and Appeals.
