Who holds Power of the Navajo Nation?
January 29, 2014 Professional Journal

COUNCIL HAS FINALLY MOVED ONTO LEGISLATION 0369-12 WHICH IS FOR THE COUNCIL TO AUTHORIZE A REFERENDUM FOR PEOPLE TO BECOME GOVERNING BODY OF NAVAJO NATION INSTEAD OF COUNCIL.

DELEGATE JONATHAN NEZ
The question before you is Who holds the power of the Navajo Nation? The people or the Navajo Council?
i think it is time for Navajo pple to have ownership of their government. WE set out to close gap between people and their government. WE talked ethics, transparency for pple to belive in government again. This legislation will do that. Right now it says Navajo Council governing body. What we want to do is say the Navajo people are the governing body.
And when this went to Naabik’iyati committee, there were questions about whether fit all the pple in this chamber? No, the pple elect us. We really need to work on regaining the trust of our Navajo pple. And if we give this referendum to pple they will regain trust because they were part of election process to have voices heard. And god knows we need trust returned to this chamber.
I also ask that this referendum be on November 2015 ballot and we are hoping for good turnout.
I’m not here to win popularity contest but bring legislation considered by people. This is the people’s recommendation.
I ask for your support at this time of reconciliation. Let us stand as one for this referendum to be united on this referendum for our people.
