Term Limits for Navajo Council Delegates opposed by Law & Order Committee

Navajo Council Law & Order Committee meeting and they are now on Legislation 0197-14, Referendum on Term Limits for Navajo Council Delegates.

SPONSOR, L&O COMMITTEE MEMBER DELEGATE RUSSELL BEGAYE
0197-14 allows council delegates to sit out one term after serving four terms/16 years, and go four terms or 16 years. with merging of new leaders and need for new leaders to address new generation and provide opportunity for emerging leaders. it’s really hard, as anyone would know, to oppose incumbent who is really well known. this is just provide opportunity for people after 16 years. i think 16 years adequate, in terms of individual wanting to do something for community.

VOTE ON 0197-14, 1 IN FAVOR, 2 OPPOSED
Two opposing votes were by Delegates Alton Shepherd and Elmer Begay. Single vote in favor was Delegate Russell Begaye.

Legislation 0197-14 continues on to Naabik’iyati Committee and then to Navajo Council for final action. Effective date of 0197-14 is 2018.
