It’s a busy week for the Navajo Council’s standing committees and other tribal government entities.
A reminder the Navajo Human Rights Commission is having its first of three public hearings tomorrow, Dec. 18, 2013, at the Navajo Nation Museum in Window Rock, Ariz., from 8 am to 5 pm. The hearings are “to assess gender violence, including violence against Navajo women and Navajo LGBTQs (Lesbians, Gays, Bisexuals, Transgenders, and Queers)

And also tomorrow, Dec. 18, 2014, is the Navajo Nation Division of Natural Resources Land Department is having its first “Navajo Land Summit” at the Twin Arrows Navajo Casino Resort in Twin Arrows, Ariz.
According to Land Department Director Mike Halona, the focus of the Summit is to provide information about the many services and opportunities the Navajo Land Department is involved with on behalf of the Navajo Nation and the Navajo People.
Halona stated that the department will share and communicate important aspects of all land use requirements/processes, the different steps to development, management tools, title/records, and leasing authority for land use; energy policy with the Summit attendees. Topics at the Summit are new homesite lease processes, new general leasing regulations, community land use planning, new Energy Policy, land withdrawals and all leasing and permits, mapping, land use, GIS, and new Navajo land title data system.

And for some unknown reasons, the Navajo Council’s Naa’bik’iyati Committee is meeting at Twin Arrows on Dec. 20, 2013. The Naa’bik’iyati Committee usually meets at the Council chamber in Window Rock. Maybe Speaker Johnny Naize, who presides over the Naabi Committee, has arranged for a Christmas dinner and I’m sure Naize is not paying for the Christmas gala out of his own pockets, which means the People are picking up the tab. the People are definitely paying for travel, plus the meeting room, meeting stipend and whatever else the Naize orders for Naabi Committee members, who are the Council delegates, to meet at Twin Arrows.
A solution to Council delegates traveling to committee meetings that are usually held in Window Rock would be for Speaker and delegates to pay for travel, meals, lodgings out of their own pockets and then get reimbursed.
The Council’s Health, Education and Human Resources Committee met in Las Vegas on Dec. 13, 2013, and there was only one item on their agenda – an annual report from the Fort Defiance Indian Health Services Hospital that was presented by FDIHS Hospital CEO Leland Leonard, which means that the Fort Defiance Indian Hospital also had to cover L. Leonard’s travel expenses. And remember that the National Rodeo Finals were happening in Las Vegas last week, which means the People paid for their elected officials and legislative staff to be in Las Vegas. And this is all happening soon after the Navajo Nation Special Prosecutors filed criminal charges against Speaker Naize, former Speaker Lawrence Morgan, former Resources Committee Chairperson George Arthur, who currently serves as the Navajo Nation’s representative to the Colorado Water Users Association, and Judiciary Committee member Lena Manheimer.

Another reminder, expect the Navajo government offices to be closed from 1 pm to 5 pm on Dec. 24, 2014, and Dec. 31, 2014, which was authorized by President Shelly in a Dec. 13, 2014, memo to all tribal employees. Shelly also approved the early of paychecks to tribal employees on Dec. 23, 2014.
