Not “recalling” Treaty of 1868 but “remembering” Treaty

HERE AT COUNCIL WHERE DEBATE OVER WHETHER TO AUTHORIZE REFERENDUM FOR NAVAJO PEOPLE TO VOTE ON BECOMING GOVERNING BODY AGAIN, INSTEAD OF COUNCIL.

DELEGATE WITHERSPOON
Referendum language is important. And word recalling is used in the term of remembering.

DELEGATE EDMUND YAZZIE
is there a way to measure this power of the Navajo people. When I think about this, I think about this as far as it’s impact to legislation. Will it strenthen legislation or confuse the voters? When we have these referendums, we only debate in English langugae instead of Navajo language so fully understand.

SPEAKER NAIZE
Delegate Witherspoon, change “recalling” to “remembering”

DELEGATE ROSCOE SMITH
I am concerned about rights of the Navajo land over lands since land is held in trust by federal government.

NDOJ DEPUTY ATTORNEY GENERAL BOBROFF
