Navajo Council on Bill addressing Navajo Education Board

NAVAJO COUNCIL NOW ON Legislation No.: 0496-17
Legislation Title: An Action Relating to Health, Education and Human Services, Law and Order, Naabik’iyati’ Committee and the Navajo Nation Council; Approving “The Department of Dine Education Administrative Act of 2017”, Amending the Navajo Nation Code, Title 10, Chapter 1, Subchapter 2, Sections 106 and 107 Establishing Direct Administrative Responsibility within the Department of Dine Education

DELEGATE JONATHAN HALE this bill addresses audit findings of Navajo Board of Education and that Board of Education would need to be full time employees and so solution was that Dine’ Department of Education would take over some of those responsibilities of board. Some school boards on Navajo Nation thought this impacted them but this only for Navajo Nation Board of Education. And i will reduce Navajo Board of Education membership cuz of issues over appointment of board members. Office of President and Vice President have not fully appointed 11-member Board of Education.

DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION SUPERINTENDENT when this review going thru that in our tribal law, it is Board of education and department secondary. that happened 2005. So i agree with bill as department of education. we have huge responsibility of overseeing education involving public schools, federally funded schools, etc. Currently there has only been 8 appointed to board.

DELEGATE LEONARD TSOSIE i think the way we did board of education, they shud educate on how to do. there is split board and problem with quorum. So when create boards we need to be careful cuz now giving board responsibility to education department. We also hear about schools out there not doing well and department has no power to do something.
