Navajo Council debating who picks Tribally Designated Housing Entity

The Navajo Nation Council has convened and is in a debate on filling two vacancies on the Council floor that were created by the guilty pleas of Johnny Naize and David Tom to criminal charges of conspiracy.

Delegate Katherine Benally said that the recess on Tuesday was a maneuver by the delegates sponsoring legislation focused on the Navajo language fluency requirement for presidential candidates to gain more votes by council delegates.

Benally said that the Council appears to be working backwards. She added that she opposes proposed legislation to transfer the authority to select TDHEs or Tribally Designated Housing Entity to the Naabik’iyati Committee. That power should remain with the Resources & Development Committee, Benally noted. Benally is the chairperson of the RDC.
