Navajo Council continues debate on nullifying uranium subcommittee

THE NAVAJO COUNCIL CONTINUES TO DEBATE 91-14 WHICH WOULD NULLIFY AND RESCIND RESOURCES & DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE’S LEGISLATION THAT CREATED URANIUM SUBCOMMITTEE

DELEGATE LEONARD TSOSIE
The tribal justice department attorneys “speak with forked tongues.” if you feel so strongly about approving 91-14 then go out there with your shovels and cleanup. some of us care about Crownpoint and some of us are trying to protect crownpoint from uranium mining. we are trying to seek solutions for navajo people out there. not even Navajo EPA and Navajo DOJ are trying to cleanup contaminated sites.
Look at Shiprock, NM.

DELEGATE WALTER PHELPS
91-14, which would nullify and rescind subcommittee created by RDC also recognizes the agreement between tribal justice department and URI and it also talks about land swap of 42,000 acres of URI land in the Crownpoint area. And URI holds mineral rights to the 42,000 acres. and how many navajo families are living on the 42,000 acres.

DELEGATE LEONARD PETE
i’m glad RDC approved legislation creating subcommittee because it brought us together. Have we really sat down to kow what will happen? one day the wisdom and common sense of this council will be tested. the decision we make we will not be able to see in four years. it’s going to come up and haunt us. it’s easy to say vote green/yes.

DELEGATE KATHERINE BENALLY
I authorized the creation of a Subcommittee and that was legal. and the RDC approved what they believed was within their authority. And URI attorney Adella Duran always knew i opposed uranium mining. i am easily swayed or make decision based on audience.
as a representative from my community which opposes uranium mining, i am aware of the effects of uranium.
