Legislation to nullify uranium subcommittee stays on Navajo Council agenda

The Council is debating the removal of Item E – LEGISLATION 0091-14Legislation 0091-14, which concerns in-situ uranium mining near Church Rock, NM.

DELEGATE ROSCOE SMITH responds to a comment by Delegate Lorenzo Curley that since the Council deleted Item A, regarding federal legislation for the development of Energy on Indian lands by reducing federal regulations, that the Council shud also delete Item E since both deal with natural resources.
DELEGATE ROSCOE SMITH
Item A is old business and Item E is new business so they are not the same.

DELEGATE KATHERINE BENALLY
Like to put on record that way accepting agenda is wrong. RDC set up a subcommittee. And by adopting agenda with Item E on agenda would open the door for Naabik’iyati Committee to remove other subcommittees of other committees.

DELEGATE ALTON SHEPHERD
The Naabik’iyati Committee has the authority to recommend legislation to Council.

POINT OF ORDER – DELEGATE LEONARD TSOSIE
WE are just asking that this done with harmony. We already talked about this and the Council wants to bully and run over RDC.

POINT OF ORDER – DELEGATE WALTER PHELPS
I made motion during Naabik’iyati Committee meeting to refer back to RDC and it failed.

VOTE ON AGENDA, 13 IN FAVOR, 4 OPPOSED, AT 12:18 PM
