Is Navajo Council’s government reform subcommittee self serving?

HERE AT NAVAJO COUNCIL NAABIK’IYATI COMMITTEE. I’VE BEEN HERE SINCE ABOUT 10 A.M. BUT COULDN’T GET WIFI UNTIL A FEW MINUTES AGO AND SO I’LL BE POSTING WHAT I WAS COLLECTING FROM NAABI COMMITTEE MEETING AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.

Naabi Committee is now on Legislation 0058-150058-15: An action relating to Naabik’iyati Committee; establishing the Naabik’iyati Committee Title 2 Reform Subcommittee.
SPONSOR, DELEGATE ALTON SHEPHERD
one approved, the standing committees will nominate representative to Subcommittee and then for Subcommittee to have draft by Spring Council Session and Legislation by Summer Council Session. Amendments to Title 2 can only be approved by the Council during one of their four regular sessions. And I’m recommending Drafts of Amendments to Title 2 by Spring Council Session because I don’t want government reform to drag on.

DELEGATE NELSON BEGAYE
We should also address the Election Code and not just Title 2. I really don’t agree with Subcommittees of Naabik’iyati because they don’t report back to Naabi and then they also do off in another direction.

DELEGATE KEE ALLEN BEGAY
Another Subcommittee just adds to the bureaucracy. And the Navajo Government Reform Commission was created to address government reform. It appears that a Subcommittee from the Council on government would also be self serving in its government reform recommendations and legislation.

I would rather have non-elected officials selected to work on government reform and for them to work with recommendations from chapters. There are a lot of groups that have recommendations. These groups include college graduates.

And what has been produced from the Navajo Nation Office of Government Development? Nothing has been produced. Perhaps, the Council should terminate office.

DELEGATE RAYMOND SMITH JR.
I support this Subcommittee. But I’m concerned about the deadlines. And a lot of work needs to be on Title 2. And we need to make our constituents aware.
