Hearing on Navajo Nation presidential candidate Chris Deschene recesses for the day

After ten minute meeting with attorneys for both sides, Hearing Officer Richie Nez announced that the attorneys for plaintiffs Dale Tsosie and Hank Whitethorne would be questioning presidential candidate Chris Deschene at 9 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 6, at the law office of David Jordan in Gallup, N.M>

Nez then recessed the hearing at 1:08 am.

In a separate interview, Nez said that a date to reconvene the hearing would be decided after Monday’s deposition of Deschene and that the hearing could reconvene on Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday.

Today’s hearing was ordered by the Navajo Nation Supreme Court, which ordered the tribal Office of Hearings and Appeals to make a decision on whether Deschene qualified to be a presidential candidate. Tsosie and Whitethorne filed separate election complaints against Deschene that alleged that Deschene lied on his oath as a qualifying candidate by claiming that he spoke Navajo language fluently.
