Efforts renewed to get disqualified presidential candidate back on Navajo Nation ballot; Creating Navajo Nation uranium advisory commission; Increasing qualifications for Navajo Nation judges while watering down presidential qualifications

Navajo Nation Council Delegate Leonard Tsosie continues his fight to get disqualified presidential candidate Chris Deschene back on the special presidential election ballot.

Tsosie goes before the Navajo Council’s Law & Order Committee with legislation 0013-15: “An Action relating to Law and Order, NAABIK’IYATI’ and The Navajo Nation Council; Amending 11 N.N.C.§§2,4,8,42,145 and 824 regarding qualifications for candidates for elective offices while allowing Navajo voters to all alternatively elect a candidate of their choice by means of write-in voting.

The L&O Committee is scheduled to start today’s meeting at 10 a.m. in the north conference room of the Navajo Nation Council chambers in Window Rock, Ariz.

Delegate Nathaniel Brown has joined Tsosie’s efforts for Deschene by sponsoring Legislation 0014-15: An Action relating to Law and Order, NAABIK’IYATI’ Committee and The Navajo Nation Council; Amending Language requirements of the Navajo Nation Election Code at 11 N.N.C. §8(A)(4), §8(B)(8), §8(D)(1)(f), §8(D)(c) and §(D)(3)(e), which goes before the L&O Committee today.

Meanwhile Delegate Jonathan Perry is tackling the deadly legacy of uranium development on the Navajo Nation. Perry goes before the Law & Order Committee with Legislation 0015-15: An Action relating to Law and Order, Resources and Development and NAABIK’IYATI’ Committee and The Navajo Nation Council; Amending 2 N.N.C. §3580 to create a Dine Uranium Remediation Advisory
Commission.

And Delegate Dwight Witherspoon appears to be waving President Ben Shelly’s banner. Witherspoon, who is serving as the Budget & Finance Committee vice chairperson, is sponsoring Legislation 0023-150023-15: An Action relating to Law and Order, NAABIK’IYATI’ Committee and The Navajo Nation Council; Amending Title 2
N.N.C. §1002 and the Navajo Election Code title 11 N.N.C. §6 for purposes of
permitting a President whose term has ended to continue his or her functions as
President pending an election, certification and the administration of oaths for the new elected President and Vice President. Legislation 0023-15 also goes before L&O today.

Witherspoon is also sponsoring Legislation 0031-150031-15: An Action relating to Law and Order, NAABIK’IYATI’ Committee and The Navajo Nation Council; Amending Navajo Nation Code Title 7 by requiring the Navajo Nation Supreme Court Justice to hold a Juris Doctor Degree. Legislation 0031-15 is also on today’s Law & Order Committee proposed agenda.
