Delegate Kenneth Maryboy: Ignore pressure from public & media

The Navajo Council’s Naabik’iyati Committee is debating Legislation 0011-14, which is for the Council to appoint a new speaker when the Council removes Delegate Johnny Naize as speaker.

Delegate Alton Shepherd, who sponsored the legislation for Council to remove Naize as speaker is also sponsoring this legislation for Council to name new speaker. During his presentation, he noted that there were 18 comments supporting the Council’s removal of Naize as Speaker. Delegate Ketherine Benally, who also chairs the Resources & Development Committee, made it very clear and very loudly that she supports Spaaker Naize. She said that the 18 comments mean nothing to her and that it shows that very few people support the removal of Naize as Speaker.

SPEAKER PRO TEMP MEL BEGAY
Remember that this legislation is about Council naming a new speaker.

DELEGATE NELSON BEGAYE
we are talking about the previous legislation and so we should talk about this legislation.

DELEGATE CHARLES DAMON
I motion to have this legislation taken off the agenda until the appropriate time.

DELEGATE MARK MARYBOY
Since you allowed others to speak, I have the same right. We shouldn’t be pressured into this because of public and media pressure. Who are we to judge somebody?
