Administrative leave for Navajo Nation government employees

2016 Navajo Nation Chapter Election poster

Charity Sam, administrative assistant for the Navajo Nation Office of the President and Vice President, announced on Monday, Aug. 29, that the Navajo Nation Personnel Policy related to time off for voting allows registered voters to receive up to two hours of paid absence from work to vote in a Navajo Nation, state, federal or local electioin.

Polls open for the 2016 Navajo Nation Primary Election at 6 a.m. and close at 7 p.m.

Sam stated that the length of the absence will be granted at the discretion of the immediate supervisor.” All registered Arizona voters are allowed two hours of administrative leave Aug. 30, to vote in the primary election.

She added that If more than the authorized two hours is needed, the decision to grant additional hours of admin leave will be up to the supervisor and, or division director.

For information, contact Arbin Mitchell, Office of the President and Vice President chief of staff, 928-810-8506, 928-864-6664.

THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION IS FROM THE ARIZONA DAILY SUN:

Arizona has an open primary law, which means voters who are not registered with a recognized political party, including those registered as independents, can choose to vote on one of the officially recognized political parties’ ballots. Voters registered with a recognized political party can only vote on that party’s ballot.

The winners of the Primary Election will appear on the General Election ballot this November along with independent candidates. Those ballots will not be party specific.

VOTING IN PERSON
Polling places will be open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Election Day. All polling places on the Navajo Nation and in Moenkopi will be on daylight saving time. Polling places not located on the Navajo Nation or in Moenkopi will be on Arizona time, which is an hour behind daylight saving time.

Sample ballots listing a voter’s assigned polling place have been mailed to households with registered voters who have not been issued early ballots. Coconino County is using all of its polling places for the Primary Election, so some voters will be voting at a different location than they did for the March 22 Presidential Preference Election and the May 17 State Special Election.

There will be new polling locations for voters in the following three precincts:

• Flagstaff 4 – Voters will vote at the Episcopal Church of the Epiphany, 423 N. Beaver St, Flagstaff, because of construction at Flagstaff High School.

• Page East 73 – The polling place for these voters was changed to the Page CAVIAT School, 19 Popular St, Page. This facility is located within the boundaries of the precinct and should be more convenient for voters.

• Sedona North 82 – All registered voters on the Coconino County side of Sedona will be voting at the Christ Lutheran Church, 25 Chapel Rd, Sedona, because of construction at the Wayside Chapel Community Church.

If people find out Monday that they have to go out of town on Election Day, they can vote early in at the County General Services Building, 110 E. Cherry Ave., Flagstaff that day until 5 p.m.

WHAT TO BRING
In order to vote at the polls Tuesday, voters need to bring appropriate identification. That can be:

1. A document bearing the name, address and photograph of the elector, such as a valid Arizona driver license or tribal enrollment card.

2. Two different forms of identification that bear the name and address of the elector, such as a utility bill or bank statement dated within 90 days or vehicle registration or insurance card.

3. One form of acceptable photo identification with one form of non-photo identification that bears the name and address of the elector.

EARLY VOTERS
The deadline has passed for early voters to mail their ballots in time to be counted. People who have voted early ballots but missed the mail-in deadline may drop them off in one of the white ballot drop boxes in the parking lots of the County General Services Building, 110 E. Cherry Ave., Flagstaff or the County Health and Community Services Building, 2625 N. King St., Flagstaff. Early voters in Tuba City can drop off their ballots in the Tuba City Elections Office located in the basement of the Tuba City Library, Main Street, Tuba City.

Early voters also can drop off their completed early ballots Tuesday at any polling place in the county between 6 a.m. and 7 p.m.

Early voters should remember to sign the return ballot envelope or their ballots will not be counted.

CAMPAIGNING
All political signs and anyone handing out political literature must be at least 75 feet from the entrance of a polling place. The only observers allowed in the polling places are those who have been appointed by the Republican or Democratic County Party chair. Observers must have an official letter of appointment with them.
